Bottled Water is a safe, convenient and healthy packaged beverage. Around the world, billions of water bottles still don’t make it to the recycling stream and end up in nature or landfill where they stay for centuries. This is unacceptable and something has to be done to change this unfortunate reality.
VaiWai® is our way to address this issue. Further, VaiWai's® bottle and cap have been tested and have been found to biodegrade in particular conditions.*
VaiWai's® bottles have been tested for biodegradability under ASTM D5511-11 which is an acceptable testing method under AS/NZS 14021:2000. (the Australian and New Zealand Standard for self-declared environmental claims). This test determines the anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under high solids anaerobic digestion conditions. Or put it simply, the method tests the biodegradability of the bottle in a rare, optimum disposal environment that mimics much faster biodegradation than most landfills. In optimum disposal conditions, VaiWai'® bottles will biodegrade over time at an approximate rate of 17% in 9 just months. (TEST RESULTS). In landfills and other more common environments the rate of biodegradation is slower.
Regardless of the rate of biodegradation, we strongly recommend recycling VaiWai® bottles.
VaiWai's® bottle limits its impact on nature. For now it is made of PET (a non renewable but completely recyclable material) but ultimately the aim is for this bottle to be made of resins made from renewable resources when one is available that can provide the requisite performance in terms of shelf-life, strength, food security etc.
We believe VaiWai's® packaging is among the best in the world of bottled water packaging. It might not be the perfect bottle but it is certainly a huge leap in the right direction.
